What is Edu-K?

In the 1970's, in the USA, Dr Paul Dennison began to put together the exercises that form the basis of Brain Gym® as he explored the link between movement and learning. He noticed the improvements made by the children he was working with who were using the exercises.

His work has now spread worldwide and the original exercises have been added to and developed. Edu-K and Brain Gym® are now used for personal development by many adults as well as helping children with their learning.

What can it treat?

Edu-K is not a therapy that 'fixes' people, nor does it treat illness. It can help people to make changes that they decide upon. Sometimes physical results such as reading more easily can occur, but it certainly would not claim to treat dyslexia or other reading difficulties. However, it can help to improve the following:

- Communication skills
- Concentration
- Confidence
- Co-ordination
- Efficiency
- Energy levels
- Learning
- Motivation
- Organisation
- Personal development
- Sports performance
- Stress

How does it work?

Edu-K (short for Educational Kinesiology) and Brain Gym® are based on the principle that we start to learn through movement. Babies gradually realise that the hand they see waving around is connected to their body. They can then choose to move it and more learning can take place.

As adults, we often forget that movement can help our brains learn more effectively, and just focus on the mind. We lose our awareness of the body-brain connection. Edu-K and Brain Gym® help us to regain this personal awareness so that body and mind can work more efficiently in an integrated way.

What will my session involve?

Each session follows a five-step process and uses discussion and simple movements to help achieve a goal decided on by you. The movements are chosen by you using a bio-feedback process, such as muscle testing. During the session you may notice and reflect upon any changes, either mental or physical, and how these link back to the original goal setting discussion. It is this aspect that is educational, as you are not passive, but actively encouraged to reflect upon the process and any changes.

No special equipment is needed, although you may prefer to use a couch for some movements. Because it is a movement based therapy, it is probably better for you to wear trousers.
