What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a form of physical therapy that was developed in the United States in the 1890s. It's primary philosophy centres around the application of various soft and hard tissue techniques designed to re establish correct functioning of the Musculo Skeletal and Nervous systems, and particularly correct alignment of the spinal column.
If the spine and/or pelvis becomes misaligned, the nerves may become trapped or impinged leading to pain, discomfort, and restricted mobility. The reasons for the spine and body to be injured in this way are many, some of the most common are incorrect lifting techniques, falls, sports injuries, childbirth, poor posture, and stress.
Mc Timoney Chiropractic?
McTimoney Chiropractic is one of many different chiropractic techniques, that is very light and easy to receive, and does not involve any violent techniques to the neck. Most acute conditions report significant improvements within 2-3 treatments. Chronic long term conditions or very severe injuries may require sessions.
The technique works by gently re-establishing the correct alignment and function of the joints of the body, particularly the spine, it also helps to promote strength and balance within the muscular system. With a healthy nervous and muscular system the body is then well placed to speedily recover from injury and trauma.
What can it treat?
McTimoney Chiropractic combined with other physical therapy techniques and rehabilitative exercises has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of Musculo Skeletal conditions, the most common being:
- Neck ache, with or without pins, needles, and tingling in the arms and hands
- Headaches, Jaw, and Ear ache
- Mid and low back pain
- Muscular aches, pains and strains
- Ligament and joint sprains
- Sciatica
- Groin pain during and after pregnancy
How does it work?
The focus of acupuncture is on improving the overall well being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms. The effectiveness of acupuncture is based on the Chinese philosophy that good health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as 'Chi' - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin.
Chi depends upon the balance between the two opposing energies - Yin and Yang - and when these become imbalanced, illness may result, causing the energy flow to be restricted. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy at the appropriate points, an acupuncturist can relieve the blockage of energy and stimulate the body's own healing response and help restore its natural balance.
What will my session involve?
Before treatment is given your practitioner will take a full medical history regarding your general health and presenting symptoms. This is then followed by a physical examination ( modesty gowns are provided for those that might want them) to determine the nature of the injury. The results of the examination are given to you along with an explanation of what they mean and how the condition can be treated. After the treatment, you may be given home care advice and any appropriate rehabilitative exercises to help improve your recovery. The number of sessions needed is very dependent on your age, as well as the nature and chronicity of the condition. Generally there should be a significant improvement within 2-3 sessions.
If there is a suspicion of a medical problem you will be referred to your GP who can then carry out any appropriate tests or imagery
How often will I need to be treated?
This varies between patients. Sometimes the effects of treatment are dramatic, and only two or three treatments are required. With other patients, the effects are more subtle and they may need treatment over a longer period of time. Your acupuncturist in Winchester will discuss your personal course of treatment with you.
How much does a session cost?
The initial consultation and first treatment are done together, last for up to 1 hour and cost £56.00, follow up sessions are up to 45 minutes in duration and cost £42.
