In Chinese Medicine the treatment of Skin Problems or Dermatology is known as Pi Fu Ke.
Treating Skin problems with Chinese Medicine
Pi Fu Ke is a precise science that requires extensive and continual study. Skin problems are most effectively treated with Chinese Herbs in conjunction with Acupuncture.
Treatment takes the form of herbal formulae which consist of a combination of herbs that work together to have greater effect. These herbs are taken as a tea to drink, or as capsules or pills. The skin is seen as a reflection of the internal health. Therefore any redness, dryness, discharge from the skin and itching reflects an imbalance in the internal health. This is why the main form of treatment is to take herbs internally. As well as using herbs internally, herbal creams can be made to apply directly on to the skin. These help repair damaged skin, reduce inflammation and ease soreness and itching.
Typically treatment is required for 8-16 weeks. This depends on the severity, and longevity of the condition to be treated.
Often patients respond quicker, and sometimes it takes longer. Unlike using steroid treatment, when stopping herbal treatment the skin does not flare up. The aim of treatment is to be able to stop taking the herbs and not have a return of the skin problem. One of the main reasons people come for treatment with Chinese Medicine is that they want to be able to stop taking strong medications. Herbal treatment is effective, but is more gentle and takes slightly longer to achieve results. However you will not become dependent on the herbs, and will be able to stop them, once the improvement is settled.
