Acupuncture FAQ's
These are the most frequently asked questions when a client first contact us. If you have any further questions or enquiries regarding Acupuncture please contact us.
Who has Acupuncture?
People come for acupuncture for a variety of reasons – some have specific conditions that need treating, other people just feel run down, and under the weather. Sometimes people choose acupuncture to maintain their health and well being. People of all ages can benefit from acupuncture including babies and children.
How can acupuncture help me?
Acupuncture treatment is aimed at treating the root of your condition, as well as the symptoms. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependant upon our energy moving through the body. This energy is known as qi, and it's flow can be blocked in a number of ways. Emotions such as anger, fear, and grief, as well as factors such as infections, injury and poor nutrition can all affect our qi's ability to flow smoothly. Acupuncture can help with physical problems, and can enhance your sense of well-being and emotional health.
What happens when I go for treatment?
First of all you will be asked all about your symptoms, your medical history and any treatment you are currently receiving, as well as questions about your sleep, digestive system, things you eat, and how you feel emotionally. Your acupuncturist will ask to look at your tongue, and will also want to feel your pulses on both wrists. Sometimes, acupuncture points used are not always near the part of the body where the problem is - for example, needles could be inserted into your hands or feet if you suffer from headaches!
How many treatments will I need?
This will vary according to your condition. Occasionally some change is noticed after only one or two treatments, although the majority of people will begin to feel better after five treatments. There are some patients who will require treatment over a longer period of time. Your acupuncturist will want to see you once, or sometimes twice a week to begin with. Your acupuncturist will monitor your progress with you to ensure you receive the best possible care for your condition or range of symptoms.
Should I tell my doctor?
If you are receiving treatment from your doctor then it would be a good idea to let your doctor know that you are having acupuncture. Please also let your acupuncturist know if you are taking any medication as this may affect how you respond to acupuncture treatment. Having acupuncture treatment may enable you to reduce or even stop taking certain types of medication, but this should be done in consultation with your doctor.
Is it safe?
Our acupuncturists are members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). They are bound by the BAcC Code of Safe Practice, which details safety and hygiene standards in the practice of Acupuncture. Patients who have been treated by a BAcC member are able to donate blood, and can be issued with a certificate to that effect.
Why should I use a BAcC member?
BAcC members have undergone extensive training in both acupuncture (to undergraduate degree level) and in biomedical sciences. BAcC members are also covered by full Medical Malpractice and Public liability insurance.
What does it feel like?
The needles used for acupuncture are much finer than those needles used to take blood, or for injections. Typical sensations felt when the needle is inserted includes a tingling feeling, or a dull ache. These sensations subside after a second or two. After treatment you may feel tired or slightly dizzy – this is short lived and is a perfectly normal reaction to treatment.
